ACT asks a different question from most therapy. Not 'how do I stop feeling this?' but 'what becomes possible if this feeling is allowed to be here?'
Much of our suffering is doubled by the effort of suppression. The grief you refuse to feel becomes a life organised around not feeling it. ACT works on unhooking — learning to notice a thought as a thought rather than as a verdict — while getting specific about your values, so that action can be guided by what you care about instead of by what you are trying to avoid.
It pairs unusually well with trauma work. Where EMDR and Brainspotting reduce the charge on the past, ACT clarifies what you want to do with the room that opens up.
What a session involves
Expect metaphor, experiential exercises and honest conversation about what you actually want your life to stand for — followed by small committed actions in that direction.
Nicole has completed training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
